Steel pipes are used in many aspects, building construction, bridge construction, etc. Commonly, there are a few types like black steel pipes, galvanized steel pipes, and carbon steel types. Here are all you need to know about these pipes.

Black steel pipes

Without coated zinc or paint substrate, black steel pipes are called so is due to its color on its surface while manufacturing. Thanks to the strength and a minor need for maintenance, black steel pipes can be used in various fields such as transporting gas, water supplying to rural and urban areas, or for conduits that provide protection for electrical wiring and deliver high-pressure steam. Also, in the old and petroleum industries, black steel pipes often function as media for piping large quantities of oil through remote areas.

Other uses like gas distribution inside and outside homes, water wells, and sewage systems. However, because they can corrode in water and the mineral in them will dissolve into the water, black steel pipes are never used for transporting potable water.

The carbon steel pipe is the earliest to use the largest amount of primary material in the modern industry. The proportion of carbon steel pipe in the total production of steel is approximately  80%. The primary use of carbon steel is in buildings, bridges, railways, and all kinds of machinery manufacturing industry, but also in the modern petrochemical industry and marine development. The characteristic of carbon steel pipes is determined by the amount of carbon when no minimum content is specified or required. Based on the different standards, there are several categories that carbon steel pipes can be classified in.

Like black steel pipes, galvanized steel pipes are also made of steel, but galvanized pipes have a zinc coating while black pipes do not. This is why they are more expensive as well as more durable compared with black pipes. The zinc of galvanized steel pipes functions as a sacrificial layer. Compared with regular pipes, galvanized steel pipes often last longer because this layer which allows the integrity and keep whole pipes intact. Such protection spares the steel from getting rust even if the zinc layer was destroyed.

How long will galvanized steel pipes last?

It all depends on how thick your zinc coating is. Thicker zinc coating usually can last longer. The environment is also another element that will determine the pipe’s life span. If the pipes are under corrosive conditions, they often last from 50 to 100 years. There are also other galvanized steel products like galvanized steel coil, tubes. Fenzhan here has all the galvanized steel products if you need, such as hot dipped galvanized round steel pipe.
