“How much mystery does The xx really need?” you ask. “How much do you got?” we reply, immediately regretting that word choice. “Uh,” you say, tactfully deciding not to point it out, “I just don’t see how it’s possible that after watching a three part documentary featuring loads of behind the scenes footage and performances of tracks from Coexist, I feel like they’ve shrouded themselves even more. Is it all a put on? They’ve coordinated their clothing, for Christ’s sake!” “No way!” We protest, our eyes still watery from a gorgeous piano-led rendition of “Fiction.” “It’s a sincere portrait of three indie prodigies who live for their art. And I’m sure all their non-black clothes were in the wash, or something.” “Fine. We’ll take your word for it,” you sigh, “their cover of ‘Last Christmas’ was really great.” “Agreed.” We say, relieved. “Let’s go listen to that again.”
