“Ode To Viceroy” is Mac DeMarco‘s love song to his favored brand of cigarettes, a ripplingly cheerful tune that leaves me strangely out of breath and with a burning sensation in my lungs. Shot in a VHS orb by director Jaspar Baydala, the video follows Mac’s daily routine with his constant companion, intercut with some off-brand commercial graphix and one really disconcerting image of a chattering skeleton, making the clip feel like a lost commercial reel from some savvy, long-dead ad agency. But the question remains: Is DeMarco glamorizing the rich, flavourful release that can be found in the cleansing smoke of ciggies? There’s only one way to find out: smoke a bunch of cigarettes.
