Driving by and briefly peering into the backstreets of the middle of nowhere, people cease to be humans and start to become characters. Defined by an archetypal point of reference, they look human, but they are just fulfilling a role. What am I talking about? Uhh. Well, watch the video for Mac DeMarco’s “European Vegas” and maybe you’ll see what I mean.

What do a pair of vindictive newlyweds, a red-shirt cowboy, and a sad woman with a camera have in common? They all appear in the same video! Starring DeMarco as a dude without a mission (and seemingly content being that way), he’s surrounded by people who have clear objectives to fulfill to reach the half-handed and ambiguous conclusion. Tied to the lackadaisical sliding of “European Vegas,” the video perfectly captures the spirit of Mac DeMarco’s music, in its wonky cadence and clear mission to be a rock and roll character.
