Grimes – “Nightmusic”

This year, Grimes became the indie-pop princess/fantasy girl of the world, with her unique combination of ethereal pixie vocals, beguiling beats, and pussy rings. The second video to arrive from her 4AD debut Visions is “Nightmusic,” which finds her donning the crown (and, again, pussy rings) by casting her as an ice princess, who also still loves getting down and dirty in the forest.

The contrasting realms of “Nightmusic” serve as a sort of metaphor for Grimes’ own image. She’s otherworldly and strikingly pale in her black garb, with a clean-cut hair-do that plays up the fairy-like idealism that’s embodied in her voice. But, down on Earth, she’s covered in dirt, dressed in a ratty white dress and her hair is a complete mess, which is sort of what she actually looks like. It’s these contradictory sides that make Grimes the captivating artist she is. But, most importantly, she literally wears a ring that is in the shape of a vagina. That girl ain’t right, but we love her.
