Giraffage & XXYYXX — “Even Though”

Did you love Tame Impala’s album cover for Innerspeaker? Were you lost for hours in its boxed-in kaleidoscopic frame, slight enough to make you look twice but apparent and mesmerizing when you realize your eyes aren’t failing you? Giraffage was ’bout it too, and spreads the concept all over his video for “Even Though.”

Whether by floating on a cloud of blissful post-dubstep or driving in a boring old car, the passing landscape is recorded at great speeds, saturated in cold colors and skipping back and forth. Then the chorus hits, and the scenes start spilling out of each other like Janus statues puking up the face behind them. Some of it’s nice to look at, but goddamn, can we agree that the kaleidoscope is the new sepia tone? Jesus.
