We really, really liked Bobby Womack’s comeback single “Please Forgive My Heart.” It’s a thrilling, adventurous and unusually satisfying track that’s brimming with enthusiasm, and now we can see why, thanks to a short behind-the-scenes documentary featuring Bobby Womack and producer Damon Albarn as they record his new album The Bravest Man in the Universe.
It’s a homecoming of sorts for Womack and his oddly painted fingers, who’s been on a self-imposed hiatus since 2000’s appropriately blandly named Christmas Album. He discusses his soul-crushing history in the business, how he was convinced to return to the studio and his resulting insecurities. But raw talent doesn’t just disappear, and it’s clear the in-studio footage of Womack’s sessions. He may have once been an unsung legend who was never given the chance to make music on his terms, but that’s changed now, and he couldn’t be happier. For all the music industry’s bullshit, it’s inspiring to see it finally give an underappreciated soul hero the opportunities that his talent deserves.
