Sondre Lerche — Heartbeat Radio

After making a giant shift from his twee big band phase with the surprisingly potent rock record Phantom Punch, Norwegian pop prince Sondre Lerche takes a slight step back with his latest album, Heartbeat Radio. Musically, the album features some imaginative arrangements that take inspiration from the poppier side of the original new wave —...

Lerche Debuts New Songs

After knocking off a killer new song called "Heartbreak Radio" for his opening number, Sondre Lerche — in town on a solo tour — made his next order of business an apology for cancelling a Toronto show in 2007. He admitted that it was "immature" and "despicable" of him. The two-thirds-full Mod Club was quick to offer...

Sondre Lerche — Phantom Punch

I'll be honest: I didn't think Sondre Lerche had it in him. Sure, Faces Down was full of pitch-perfect pop, but Two-Way Monologue did little to build on its promise, and last year's horrendous Duper Sessions had the singer leaning into the murky depths of the airport lounge singer. Phantom Punch is a record positively brimming in confident...

Sondre Lerche & The Faces Down Quartet — Duper Sessions

While Norwegian pop phenom Sondre Lerche's new album has "crooner schtick" written all over it, Duper Sessions isn't nearly as heavy-handed or schlocky as, say, Robbie Williams' Swing When You're Winning or the Michael Buble catalogue. Lerche instead offers up his typically pristine pop songwriting (plus a selection of covers, including...

Sondre Lerche — Two Way Monologue

Sondre Lerche’s debut album, 2002’s Faces Down, was something of a pop revelation — the album’s set of near-perfect songs were breezy, well-crafted, charming and, most astounding of all, recorded when Lerche was only a teenager. Now the Norwegian boy wonder is a ripe 21 years old and has miraculously managed to create an album as well-crafted and...

LISTEN: Sondre Lerche - "Countdown" (Beyonce Cover)

Tradition is a beautiful thing. Such is the case with Sondre Lerche's annual covers that make their way into our iPods this time of the year. In 2009, the Norwegian sing-songwriter brought us his sweet, blushing version of Animal Collective's "Bluish". In 2010, he delivered a strings-free take on Owen Pallett’s “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt”. This...

I Read The News Today... For March 2, 2011

Some total douchebag(s?) decided to steal gear from a Hamilton, Ont. practice space Saint Alvia and two other bands, June & July and Eat Me Suck City, use. A total of $30,000 worth of gear is missing, and you can find out what the asshat(s?) stole over at Saint Alvia's website. The bands would greatly appreciate any information about who did...

Sondre Lerche — "Heartbeat Radio"

Sondre Lerche's video for the title track to the recently released Heartbeat Radio was shot at Coney Island at nightfall and into the wee hours of the morning (we're talking 3 a.m.). Lerche told Spinner.ca the video was done "in the spirit of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald," so expect to see lots of flapper clothes.

Sondre Lerche — Heartbeat Radio

Those Scandinavians seem to have a thing for symphonic orchestration. Cases in point: Sondre Lerche, Jens Lekman and every Scandinavian metal band ever. We're not complaining; it stops things from being boring.

Sondre Lerche's Big Break

At the age of 26 and already five albums into his career, singer/songwriter Sondre Lerche is reportedly John Mayer-big in his native Norway. Lerche hasn't had a mainstream breakthrough in North America yet, but he reached new heights of visibility a year ago when he composed the soundtrack to the Steve Carell flick, Dan In Real Life....

Sondre Lerche Readying Album

If Sondre Lerche can be used as an indicator, there's some hope that child stars can turn out well-adjusted. Lerche wasn't on any doomed '80s sitcoms, but, in his home country of Norway, he was a veritable pop sensation by the time he'd finished high school. Lerche's fast-track to success started with guitar lessons at age eight. He was playing...

Sondre Lerche Colours Dan In Real Life

Sondre Lerche dominates the soundtrack for Dan In Real Life, a new film starring Steve Carrell as a widower and newspaper advice columnist who falls in love with his brother's girlfriend. The 24-year-old Norwegian singer/songwriter wrote, produced and performed almost everything on the soundtrack, which comes out on Oct. 2 via EMI. The movie is...

Sondre Lerche's New Work Packs Punch

Sondre Lerche has done a lot of growing up in the past half-dozen years. When his Faces Down debut came out in 2002, the then 19-year-old came off as a studious pop prodigy who was more concerned with chord structure and heady lyrics than youthful good times. Since then, Lerche has wrestled with international critical acclaim, dabbled in...
