New York Dolls — 'Cause I Sez So

The Dolls' third studio album since their 1973 self-titled debut features the same lineup as 2006's comeback record. Only singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain remain from the original group. They've reunited with producer Todd Rundgren (Meatloaf, Cheap Trick), who was also at the controls for the first album, on this 12-track disc...

New York Dolls' Slow Start Improves To A Glamtastic Finish

I arrived at the Phoenix a couple of songs into the opening set by Toldeo, Ohio's We Are The Fury, but that was still too early. The band's mix of hard rock, glam and punk is in a similar vein to the New York Dolls, but they're not in the same league as the headliners. Enough said. But even the Dolls weren't in the same league as themselves...

New York Dolls — One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This

I saw the Dolls twice on last year's reunion tour and didn't pay a lot of attention to their new songs since it was their vintage material that was the prime attraction. But now, after spending time with the band's first studio album in 32 years, I realize that singer David Johansen wasn't blowing smoke when he said that the new Dolls are better...

The New York Dolls — The Return Of The New York Dolls

For us rockers who think Morrissey is just a whiney waste of time, we have to at least give him props for reuniting these enduring icons of glam and punk, The New York Dolls. Despite the absence of the late Johnny Thunders (amply covered by Steve Conte), Dave Johansen, Syl Sylvain and Arthur Kane rise to the occasion and kick out all the classics...

Today In Music History: Johnny Thunders Dies On April 23, 1991

Former New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders passed away under suspicous circumstances on this day in 1991. Thunders (real name John Anthony Genzale) had a heroin problem throughout his career and was playing as a solo artist at the time of his death, but hadn't been using smack for some time. He'd been on methadone in an effort to kick skag...

Pumping: New York Dolls — Cause I Sez So

Wow, this one's all over the place for the Dolls. For example, there's a song on here that, as one CHARTattack staffer astutely pointed out, sounds a hell of a lot like Calexico. Other songs recall bluesmen like Howlin' Wolf and borrow from Middle Eastern music. It's an enjoyable listen if it does come across as a bit unfocussed.

Listen Up: NY Dolls Sez So

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Mattel's Barbie and 38 years since the New York Dolls formed in New York City. But the quintet featuring original members David Johansen (vocals) and Sylvain...

New York Dolls: Don't Think Too Much, Just Go With The Vibe

The New York Dolls released two albums in the early '70s, but were much more influential than their piddling sales would indicate as their swaggering, good-time rock 'n' roll music and androgynous stage presence struck a chord with both musicians and a cult following of fans and helped inspire punk rockers and hair bands alike. After 32 years, The...

New Releases: New York Dolls Drag Up New LP

How long is too long? Can a band change? At what point is it weird for a man to dress in drag? With the New York Dolls' new record, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This, the answers are apparently never, slightly and right now (singer David Johansen has given up on the feminine look). The LP is the band's first in more than 30 years...

New York Dolls Make Their Return One To Remember

The New York Dolls live reunion went so well that they went into the studio to keep the momentum going. The fruits of their labour will emerge on July 25 with the Roadrunner Records release of One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This.
