BACKGROUND/COMPOSITION: Substituting for India's Menwhopause was this Irish power pop band with an equally odd name. Fred are popular in their Irish homeland and have won independent music awards in Canada, but my hopes weren't particularly high for this album. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this 12-track disc. Horns give "Running" some extra oomph and make it an excellent pop song, while "The Lights Are With Us" is another standout.

Some bands keep it simple with their monikers, and Ireland's Fred are one of them. The monosyllabic band will release Go God Go on Oct. 1 through Sparks Music.
