On the Road Again

Live Review:

20 Miles & Bob Log III
January 24, 2000
The Horseshoe - Toronto, ON

"Maybe this wasn't such a good idea." Famous last words most likely spoken by Judah Bauer, drummer for the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and 20 Miles' closest thing to fame. In Toronto to promote their age-old Fat Possum release, it was clear from the get-go that these furballs didn't know what was going to hit them when they allowed psycho-delta bluesman Bob Log III to fill the tour's opening slot. Who was the bigger draw? Take three wild stabs.

Jumping onto the stage in his trademark customized motorcycle helmet and jumpsuit, this one-man band brought out the onlookers in droves, with flamboyant slide guitar, distorted vocals and intense rhythms. Virtually packing the front of the Horseshoe, there was a clear difference from Log's first Toronto performance a year ago. This time around, the crowd seemed more accepting of Bob Log love songs such as the engaging "Shit On My Leg" and party favourite "Clap Your Tits," an interactive piece that saw Log virtually begging for audience participation. Returning to the stage for an encore that lasted as long as his regular set, Log left some large shoes for the 20 Miles boys to fill.

They didn't fill them. While tight and rather energetic, 20 Miles' set was nowhere near the levels of hysteria and pandemonium set by Log. Strolling away before the band had even finished, many realized that the best part of the show happened way before midnight. For what was probably the umpteenth time on the tour, Log stole the show, giving 20 Miles yet another case of the blues.
