On the Road Again
Live Review
Erykah Badu
The Guvernment, Toronto
June 4, 1997
Badiusm is not simply the title of the platinum-selling debut album of
Erykah Badu, it's a mood, it's a feeling, it's a way of understanding and
living life.
Ms. Badu presented her philosophies to a sold out crowd at the Guvernment
last Wednesday against a soothing backdrop of glowing candles, smoky
incense and intoxicating music, revealing her sorrows and her joys through
her distinct dove-like voice. Though the seven piece band appeared to be
lazily uncooperative at times, Erykah graciously disciplined them on stage
and channeled her energies into the original jazz 70's funk, and
contemporary hip hop arrangements that entranced the audience.
Adorned in her trademark African head dress and symbolic Egyptian
jewelry, Erykah accomplished something few artists are able to do in a mere
two hours: aid in the (r)evolution of the increasingly tired r&b/soul music
genre and at the same time inspire within her fans a genuine and spiritual
appreciation for all natural, beautiful music.
