We're in the second half of the year now (where did the time go?) and I've been pretty impressed by some of the records released so far. But the last couple months have made me realize my top 10 list at the end of the year is going to be very… Black.
That's 'cause there are three records I've absolutely loved have been or will be released this year by bands with the word "Black" in their moniker: The Black Keys' Brothers and Black Mountain's Wilderness Heart and The Black Angels' Phosphene Dream. The latter two records are both appropriately out Sept. 14, and both bands are touring together this fall.
I've picked "Bad Vibrations" for today's tune because I think it's an awesome opening track, and it best expresses what Phosphene Dream's all about. It's a really, really great combination of early, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegaze and Physical Graffiti-era Led Zeppelin.
Its creepy, minor key intro riff draws you in right away and it keeps snaking along until it finally unravels and explodes into a riff that'll make lots of stoners worldwide very, very happy.
Yes, the entire record is just as good. If you like great rock 'n' roll, there's absolutely no reason for you not to pick this record up when it comes out.
