I've just emerged from an evening which saw me rediscover British trip-hop/trance act Faithless (more on that tomorrow), but I've mostly spent the morning realizing that Walter Schreifels' An Open Letter To The Scene debut solo album is really, really great.
In case you don't know who Schreifels is, he started his music career as a member of hardcore band Youth Of Today, and from there moved on to Gorilla Biscuits (he's still a member). He was also a member of post-hardcore band Quicksand (and is therefore kinda responsible for screamo, but don't hold that against him) and melodic rock band Rival Schools (who were also quite influential on what we now call emo).
An Open Letter To The Scene is more melodic rock from him, except this time it's a move towards more folky material. On it, he covers Agnostic Front's "Society Suckers," one of the fastest hardcore tunes you might ever hear, and turns it into a bongo-filled folk tune. It's completely awesome.
Here's a comparison.
