Born Ruffians — Say It

Music Review
Born Ruffians' Say It

There's something to be said for simplicity. In a world where music is inundated with layers upon layers of Pro Tools tracks and reverberated vocals, a less-is-more approach can be quite refreshing.

Such is the case with the new album Say It from Born Ruffians. The follow up to 2008's Red, Yellow & Blue finds the three-piece doing more of what they do best: simple, stripped down indie rock.

There's no better example of this than the album's first single, "Sole Brother." The track features each member showcasing their super-cool ability to make poppy indie rock with the most basic of riffs.

"What To Say" is sure to be a constant on college radio over the summer. The song features a freakishly fantastic head-bopping beat that's perfect post-bar hangouts.

Other highlights include "Oh Man" and "At Home Now." The former's jangly guitars mixed with Luke Lalonde's awkwardly cool vocals conjure up images of '50s, thick glasses and rock 'n' roll, while the latter seems destined to run during the credits of a Wes Anderson film.

Born Ruffians have firmly established themselves as one of Canada's prominent indie bands with Red, Yellow & Blue and now, Say It.
