This 67-minute DVD from the personal archives of Guided By Voices singer Robert Pollard features lots of low-quality video footage of the frontman and his bandmates from GBV and his other musical projects, both on and off the stage. Vintage film, television and animation clips — which have nothing to do with anything else — are often interspersed. There are also nine full-length videos from GBV and other groups.
There's an amusing video of a group impersonating Devo, complete with yellow radiation suits and Boojie Boy in a crib. The "Motor Away" clip shot in a hotel lobby is much more basic, but the song still has merits. There are lots of people wearing masks in the "Get Me Extra" video, and throughout the DVD, for that matter. There are also videos for Circus Devils' "War Horsies" and Boston Spaceships' "Winston's Atomic Bird."
But the problem with all this is none of the bands or songs are identified until the end credits. With someone as prolific as Pollard, and with the disc featuring material dating from 1994 until recently, this can be pretty confusing for all but diehard followers.
There's just too much clutter in this audio-visual collage. So if you're looking for a Pollard DVD, you'd be best to skip this one and pick up the 2007 New West GBV release, Live From Austin TX.
