Carolyn Mark’s bright party girl personality is part of what made her first two solo albums so fun, but every great party is followed by a killer hangover, which Mark suffers through beautifully on The Pros And Cons. More serious in its traditional country-style arrangements and autobiographical lyrics, the album picks up on Mark’s well-tread themes of good times and boozing, but with much darker and more personal undertones. The nakedness of the songs show a softer, quieter side of Mark, but she sings through it all with the same warmth and humour that has always made her music so likable.
