Violinist Eyvind Kang has been rocking the avant-garde scene since 1995 and his sixth album shows no signs that he’s letting up any time soon. Recorded live at the 2000 Angelica Festival in Bologna, Italy, Virginal Co-ordinates stars Kang and a 22-member orchestra featuring Mike Patton on vocals and "electronics." The result is a series of sprawling, experimental excursions that resemble a subdued Sun Ra Arkestra. The glorious 20-minute "Doorway To The Sun," for example, is an exercise in collective mind expansion. Often transcendent, the disc’s main fault lies in its surprising sterility as a live recording.
