Now that rock duo mania is fully upon us it's only mildly surprising that the music world has served up an emotionally-damaged, cabaret-obsessed, creep-goth piano response to The White Stripes. Pianist/vocalist Amanda Palmer caterwauls and drummer Brian Viglione hammers away with reckless abandon throughout this self-titled record, creating the illusion of a musical gone horribly wrong. The bawdy "Coin-Operated Boy" and "Missed Me" have a certain devilish charm, but the most defining moment is "Girl Anachronism." The manic key attacks and scathing observations about pills and operations are entirely unnerving... but they're also intoxicatingly fascinating.
