Kylie Minogue — Kylie: Live In New York

Music Review
Kylie Minogue's Kylie: Live In New York

Kylie's latest live album opens with a very appropriate overture.

Like a big gay pop feature motion picture, the show begins with the iconic horns from the 20th Century Fox films intro, sliding blissfully into a cloudy medley of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and finally climaxing with "The Sound Of Music." The crowd is then directly thrown into Kylie's future-pop dance pit and the party begins.

It's a perfect preface to probably the gayest and most glorious pop concert of 2009. But does the record live up to the live spectacle? Of course it does!

Having perfected the set list across South America, Asia and Australia for over a year, Kylie's first ever North American tour is the greatest in greatest hits. Spanning latest album X all the way back to a campy-cabaret version of "Locomotion," most songs are brilliantly reworked and most of her banter is also included.

The lady knows how to work the crowd with coyness, earnestness and teasing. Since Kylie doesn't do any strenuous dancing throughout the show (she leaves that up to her dancers), she's able to actually sing and hit all the right high notes.

The only thing missing is the brand new track she previewed during the tour "Better Than Today," which will most likely show up on her next album.

This is a must for fans, a good refresher for some, and a big exploding rainbow for friends of Dorothy.
