This album was a long time coming. The North Sea was recorded last year, but was shelved after half the band quit. At eight tracks, it almost appears to be an EP. However, with some songs clocking in at over 10 minutes, this is a grandiose piece of work. The melodic, spacey sound of The Fawn remains, but the songs are distinct.
Opening track "The News" has a definite country influence, while "Gwendolyne" is a jangly pop confection that is instantly addictive. More epic tracks like "The North Sea" and "Drownded" start off as light touches, then move into grinding bass and heavy riffs underscored by lead singer John Crossingham’s incomparable falsetto. It’s not the most focused work, but it’s beautiful.
