Liars — They Were Wrong, So We Drowned

Liars - They Were Wrong, So We Drowned

If you've ever wondered what listening to Kid A, obsessively re-reading free jazz reviews in The Wire and going off your medication during the holidays would translate into musically, you now have your answer. New York noise provocateurs Liars are the alchemists in question and the resulting concoction is their second album, They Were Wrong So We Drowned. Industrial thumps, noxious skronks and off-kilter howls are combined to create a sonic witches brew that's neurotic, sinister and altogether uncomfortable to listen to.

"There's Always Room On The Broom" is a defining track. It pierces with feedback, a fractured beat and what appears to be backing vocals hollering "Me-ooowww." The best track, however, is "Broken Witch," featuring an erratic pulse, desperate pleas about wanting to become a horse and the fadeout chant of "Blood! Blood! Blood!" They Were Wrong isn't actually a good record. But it's unsettling as hell and at least that's something.
