Just when you think The Polyphonic Spree have established the limits of how big a band can be, along come Montreal's Red Mass. There are somewhere between 30 and 40 members in this collective — a project organized and directed by a man named Choyce (formerly of CPC Gangbangs).
In their two years of existence, Red Mass have already managed a staggering 22 releases — mostly splits and singles. At seven songs, this EP appears to be their lengthiest creation.
Choyce has remarked that he's attempting to "pursue the use of... sex magik" with this band, and that was an apt choice of words. In many ways, the mood on
Red Mass is reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers'
Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
There's plenty of genre jumping taking place here — from power pop to rock to punk — but the underlying vibe is a Famines-esque garage rock. The title of the EP's second track is the best descriptor for what you'll find on
Red Mass: "Weird Mess."
