Broken Social Scene — Broken Social Scene

Music Review
Broken Social Scene's self-titled record

There are three words that can explain why our southern neighbours are looking to Canada for their music — Broken Social Scene. Far and away the best group on the much lauded Arts & Crafts roster, Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning and their band of merry musicians churn out another fantastically complex collection of indie jams, elegant melodies and plain old rock 'n' roll.

BSS' first single, "7/4 Shoreline" is probably the most mainstream track of the bunch and features Feist in all her distorted vocal glory, while "Major Label Debut" sees Drew successfully enter catchy drone pop territory. Not many acts can get away with mimicking Stephen Malkmus (on "Ibi Dreams Of Pavement [A Better Half]), or make an incoherent mess of vocals, drums and hand claps ("Windsurfing Nation") sound perfectly understandable, but most acts aren't as creative, thoughtful or intelligent as the BSS orchestra.

With so many talented vocalists all doing their own thing, it sounds like BSS are in the midst of an all night ecstasy binge and, fortunately, they've invited their fans to party right along side them.
