Etaoin Shrdlu — Mating Calls
- Mating Calls
- Standard Format
- 3.5 / 5

Etaoin Shrdlu are comprised of members from some of southern Ontario's finest mathy post-rockers like Weights And Measures and Rockets Red Glare, and they've created a beautifully organic instrumental debut.
The band's portentous name, apparently the letters of the alphabet with the highest frequency, in descending order, belies the fun found on the album. A better indicator are the song titles. Names like "Brown Sabbath," "Yow" and "1995-1997," lets the listener know this is a self-aware band with a sense of humour.
Slint are any easy reference point for Mating Calls, although such a comparison somewhat pigeonholes Etaoin Shrdlu. While not the most original band going, something about this project seems like this is just the beginning of something bigger.
