Converge — Axe To Fall

Is Converge hardcore's very own Radiohead? Their career trajectory certainly supports that theory.
Although Converge began life as a fairly standard hardcore punk band with 2001's Jane Doe, the band have continuously defied expectations. They've changed and evolved with subsequent releases while maintaining their rooting in a genre known for monotony and formula.
Axe To Fall is no different, mixing the sludge-y bottom end introduced on 2004's You Fail Me with precision guitar work, straddling the thin line between metal and hardcore.
But the quartet's greatest strength is their ability to pull in new fans, not just to the group, but to their genre in general. That they achieve this while getting heavier and more brutal with each release is a minor miracle.
