Immaculate Machine, the latest addition to the Mint Record's roster, have their roots firmly planted in The New Pornographers' family tree. Not only is co-singer Kathryn Calder Carl Newman's long lost niece, but their sound treads very closely to Newman's sunny power pop. The result is several catchy tracks complete with intricate harmonies, crunchy guitars and repetitive choruses.
There's plenty to like here such as the bouncy New Pornographers-ish "No Such Thing As The Future" and the Hawksley Workman-esque "So Cynical," but even with the great tracks it's clear that this is just a start. With some stronger, more focused songwriting Immaculate Machine could one day dethrone The New Pornographers to become Canada's power pop kings.
