Whereas the music scene in the early to mid-'90s echoed the sounds of the Beatles and other '60s pop acts, nowadays you can hear Gram Parsons and The Band influences in some of the East Coast area's up-and-coming acts.
The Guthries' debut, Off Windmill, garnered much critical praise, placing them firmly along the same alt.country road once travelled by Son Volt, Scud Mountain Boys and The Jayhawks. More country than Wilco, but less poppy than The Pernice Brothers, The Guthries are pure, down-home twang with an indie pop twist. Like contemporaries Beachwood Sparks, they're heartfelt and show an unabashed love and respect for their influences — no matter how uncool or unpopular they may be.
