Boys Noize — Power

Music Review
Boys Noize's Power

If you're a fan of Boys Noize, you probably know remixing is their strength. So pulling off an entire album of original electro successfully can be a tricky task.

Boys Noize don't fully succeed on Power, but they do get some things right. The Justice-style chainsaw basslines and synth rips are prevalent on Power, and simple, effective melodies are pushed to the forefront instead.

But there's, well, not much in between. Power could be a video game soundtrack. There's very little to sink your teeth into or even anything to make you go wild on the dancefloor.

The album's stronger moments come when the German DJ gets weird, like on the cavernous "Nerve." Odd, drippy noises at least keep your headphones filled with impressive sonic goodness. The soca-fied "Drummer" is a Major Lazer-style number and a welcome break from the mostly cold electronics throughout the record, too.

Thankfully, the whole affair closes with the dramatic "Heart Attack," a dizzying slow-burner with a heartbeat bass, but in the end you wish you were listening to another amazing Boys Noize remix and not a collection of snore-able electro.
