Flight Of The Conchords — I Told You I Was Freaky

Music Review
Flight Of The Conchords' I Told You I Was Freaky

If you're not a fan of the Flight Of The Conchords television show, you'll think this album is ridiculous. And rightfully so. But if you're familiar with Bret McKenzie's and Jemaine Clement's TV exploits, I Told You I Was Freaky should be a welcome companion.

Overall, the mood here is similar to the funky vibe on Beck's Midnite Vultures. "Hurt Feelings," a lament about how no one likes the duo's cooking, is a close cousin to rapper More Or Les' "Brunch!" That track's hip-hop-meets-R&B aesthetic carries into one of the album's most memorable songs, the 2 Live Crew-ish "Sugalumps" (a parody of the Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps").

Clement and McKenzie may be the current kings of the farce genre, but that doesn't mean there isn't some real talent hidden behind the jokes. Mid-album track, the almost-serious "Rambling Through The Avenues Of Time," is oddly reminiscent of Peter Sarstedt's "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)" (which we all know from The Darjeeling Limited's opening vignette), and offers up thoughtful lines like: "Your beard is woven of heartache/And we'll drink for the lonely tonight."

It isn't crucial that you've seen the Season Two episodes that spawned these songs, but it would probably add something that's missing otherwise.
