Before John Maclean became The Juan Maclean, he played guitar for electro-indie upstarts Six Finger Satellite. His debut solo disc leans heavily on the electro side of that combination without sacrificing too much in the way of quality songwriting. Less Than Human has its share of robotic keyboard noises and ambient techno beats, but dreamy vocals by Maclean and singer Nancy Whang allow it to keep one toe dipped in the organic world. Though it seems cold at first, songs like the funky "Tito's Way" thaw out the sonic environment and make Less Than Human a slow-burning success.
