The Antichrist Super-store is up to his usual tricks on his latest effort, The Golden Age Of Grotesque, rehashing Nine Inch Nails arrangements ("This Is The New Shit" - whatever you say there, bud), driving proto-metal anthems ("mOBSCENE," "Use Your Fist And Not Your Mouth"), warped cabaret motifs (the title track) and industrial-strength psychobilly ("Doll-Dagga Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag"). Get beyond Manson's expletive-laden tirades and you'll see the method to his madness, best demonstrated on the song "Ka-boom Ka-boom": "I like a big car, 'cause I'm a big star/I make big rock 'n' roll hits." Never mind the media hype - Marilyn Manson is a harmless rock star, as much of a cultural threat as Avril Lavigne. And, like the Nymph From Napanee, you'd be hard-pressed to get one of his catchy riffs out of your head. Live with it.
