Butter is Glitch-hop DJ Hudson Mowhawke's (a.k.a. Ross Birchard) full-length debut for Warp Records. With a slew of singles and compilation tracks already under his belt and an EP released by Warp earlier this year, the Scotland-based musician seems poised to take the indie hip-hop/electronic world by storm. That Butter feels like an Entroducing... for the digital age certainly can't hurt, either.
Basic hip-hop beats form the backbone of the record while all types of electronic keys, blips and glitches play overtop. Smartly playing his first hand close to his chest, Hud Mo only enlists vocalists for three of the record's 18-tracks, tapping Olivier Daysoul for two of them and Stone Throw's brilliant futuristic Prince impersonator Dam Funk for the other.
Although it's clear Hudson Mohawke is deadly serious about his craft, the music is fun and recalls Dan The Automator's one-off Deltron 3030 project, which is serious pedigree for a young and promising musician.
