Morrissey — You Are The Quarry

Music Review
Morrissey — You Are The Quarry

There was much nervous hand-ringing amongst Moz fans when word got out he was set to make his return. His last album, 1997's Maladjusted, was clearly the most awful of his career and 1995's Southpaw Grammar wasn't much better. Couple that with the fact Moz had signed up Jerry Finn (Blink-182, Green Day) to produce and the worst sort of Morrissey-goes-pop-punk nightmares were running rampant.

But the seven year gap between records and the self-imposed exile to America have done wonders for the music world's chief of gloom. With You Are The Quarry it becomes clear that America has been the perfect muse, helping him rediscover the droll sarcasm and cutting observation that made him famous. The opening trio of "America Is Not The World," "Irish Blood, English Heart" and "I Have Forgiven Jesus" are smart bomb precise in their attack. And "First Of The Gang To Die" matches "Jack The Ripper" and "Last Of The Famous International Playboys" for crime romance balladeering.

Stylish, powerful and bold, You Are The Quarry represents a triumphant return to form for Morrissey.
