The Black Heart Procession — Six

Music Review
The Black Heart Procession's Six

The Black Heart Procession have made their name on crafting hypnotic gloom chants for borderline suicidals. The band stick true to their formula on their sixth album, fittingly titled Six, by unfurling 13 songs of bleak cityscapes, frolicking witches and broken spirits.

"Wasteland" is a particularly fascinating song. It's vaguely reminiscent of the Dennis Hopper/Gorillaz collaboration "Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head," except with a far more intimate serial killer vibe and lines like "I'm not leaving until I tear out your heart." "Rats," meanwhile, paints the picture of an urban jungle full of decay and danger around every corner.

Probably the best moment on the album is "Forget My Heart." it's a sort of anthem for the self-loathing, with its spiky tempo shoots some much needed energy into the middle of an album that occasionally gets too caught up in it's own meditative darkness.

Overall, Six is a slow, heavy listen, but those bravehearted souls who aren't afraid of the dark will find some rewards here.
