Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson — Break Up

When one goes through a breakup, one sometimes tries to suppress all memories of one's former partner in an effort to get over them. It's probably ironic, then, that there's next to nothing memorable about Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson's new collaborative album.

Break Up is full of gentle, somewhat catchy folk-pop tunes, and while there's nothing bad about these songs there's nothing that makes them stick out, either. If, as press about Break Up has mentioned, it's supposed to chronicle a "tempestuous affair," it seems the music should be a bit more hot-blooded. Instead, we get nine songs that sound exactly the same and bleed into each other.

Break Up isn't even a half-hour long, and by the time it finishes it seems like it only just started. That makes it feel like eating a bag of shoddily made potato chips in a tiny bag that's sold half full: It contains nothing of value and leaves you feeling completely unsatisfied.
