The Raveonettes have always reached back to the early years of rock 'n' roll for inspiration, but never so blatantly as they do on Pretty In Black. Songwriter Sune Rose Wagner is no longer restricting himself to b-flat chords and guitar fuzz, and his Buddy Holly and Everly Brothers influences now bubble cleanly to the surface. But Wagner and fellow singer Sharin Foo aren't just mimics and they have a blast corrupting the nostalgic sonic backdrops with brazenly violent and sexual lyrics. With its sweet melodies and sinful words, this homage to the past is a major leap forward.
