Ever since Dave Grohl wrote the quiet "Marigold" for his previous band, it was clear that Nirvana's drummer was conflicted. Grohl loves to rock out, but his best songwriting often appears on his more serene material. On In Your Honor, Foo Fighters' first double disc, Grohl keeps his two identities separate, putting his riff-ready rockers on one half and his spacey acoustic numbers on the other.
Fortunately, for Foo fans there's tons of material here, but separating the two styles was a risky move. "The Last Song," is a catchy, scream filled track, but "Blues Are Black," is a metal riff love affair that misses the mark. On disc 2, Grohl's more interesting side, there are a ton of soft standouts including "Still" and "Another Round."
Though there are many memorable moments on both discs, 10 consecutive songs of one genre gets tiring. The Foos would have done better by integrating the styles over two records, or by cutting out a bit of the clutter to make one outstanding album.
