Grand Hallway — Promenade

Music Review
Grand Hallway's Promenade
Promotional materials for Promenade suggest Grand Hallway's music is well suited to fans of Belle And Sebastian, and that estimation isn't completely out of line. The songs on this Seattle-based eight-piece's second full-length collection are sometimes comparable to parts of Belle And Sebastian's Storytelling — specifically the track "Black And White Unite."

Where Grand Hallway differ noticeably from the Glaswegian superstars, is in their music's singalong grandiosity. In their most heart-swelling moments, the songs on Promenade are more akin to tunes crafted by Hey Rosetta! or Bend Sinister. Grand Hallway's aesthetic also hints at Woodpigeon's two extremes — their playfulness and their solemnity — and as on Woodpigeon's albums, Promenade's crescendos always come in waves.

There are a few dull moments on this disc, but overall, it's a competent display of orchestral pop prowess. Fans of the Kings Of Convenience will definitely be able to handle this album, but its gentleness could tire those in search of excitement.
