Fourteen albums into their career, it's amazing Yo La Tengo have anything more to offer the world. After all, this is the indie rock trio to end all indie rock trios; how many bands can claim to have influenced entire soundtracks worth of young upstarts?
But Popular Songs comes hot on the heels of 2006's I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass and this year's Condo Fuck's covers record. It's not the snappiest title from a band known for clever nomenclature, but it's apt, as the band genre hops from lo-fi garage to swinging London rock to American girl-group pop.
Popular Songs still sounds and feels like a Yo La Tengo album, with it's hazy vocals and groovy bass lines. That's an impressive feat for a band that time and again has thrown curveballs to fans and continues to surprise after a quarter century.
