Amelia Curran — Hunter, Hunter

Music Review
Amelia Curran's Hunter, Hunter

Amelia Curran turned her back on Newfoundland 10 years ago and set up camp in Halifax, but the songstress returned to her old St. John's stomping grounds to record this fifth album.

Sonically, Curran is not unlike Sarah Harmer circa I'm A Mountain; she tends to use layered vocals the same way as Harmer. Lyrically, her talent is evident in her ability to write from a number of viewpoints.

On stand-out track "The Mistress" — a confessional sung in the voice ofthe other woman, where Curran slaps a Do Not Enter sign across her life (or perhaps that of some fictional character) — she comes across as surprisingly bad ass.

What Curran is missing in wow factor, she definitely makes up with intimacy. Hunter, Hunter is understated and uncomplicated, but never dull. Its individual songs won't stay with you for long after a listen, but Curran's voice and a few spectral melodies do tend to persist.
