"I don’t care anymore/People say that I should/They’re all looking for hits/I’d rather lay on the hood of an old car with my girlfriend and my real friends," sings Matt Mays on his band’s new self-titled record. Mays doesn’t have to worry about pleasing other people because, whether intentional or not, he’s got more than a few potential hits with this one. He’s picked up where his debut left off, pushing his gritty, country-rock sound to the next level with powerful results. From the slow grind of opener "Stand Down At Sundown," to the full-throttle drive of single "Cocaine Cowgirl" and "Time Of Your Life," Mays and El Torpedo nail this album to the wall. Fellow folk rocker Kathleen Edwards chimes in with husky backing vocals on "The Plan," while the lyrics reflect Mays coming to terms with his rising fame.
