Belladonna is the musical equivalent of being submersed in water — the sounds are visceral and measured while coaxing a particular sense of claustrophobia despite its immense openness. The album's author, Daniel Lanois, is the esteemed super-producer of such acts as U2, Bob Dylan and Peter Gabriel, as well as Brian Eno's collaborator on his seminal ambient works of the '80s and '90s.
On Belladonna, Lanois strives and achieves a similar melodic esotericism using his prevalent slide guitar with help from virtuoso jazz pianist Brad Mehldau. Together, all 13 tracks culminate in a rich sonic experience that's as inviting as a warm bath.
