Eleni Mandell — Miracle Of Five

Music Review
Some people have referred to Eleni Mandell as the female Tom Waits. This may be true of the incisive, poetic narratives in her lyrics, but in many ways she's more like the American Sarah Harmer. Mandell possesses a similarly warm and mellow yet smoky tone. Miracle Of Five is a beautifully understated collection of songs that have an old-fashioned feel, but are infused with a contemporary spark. Mandell's vocals are supported by soft strains of acoustic guitar, saxophone, lap steel, dobro, viola and harp from talented backing musicians who include Wilco's Nels Cline. Opening track "Moonglow, Lamp Low" is a slow jazz number, while "Make-Out King" has a wry, self-effacing and relatively upbeat feel. The title track is a dreamy little number that floats down a river of Hawaiian guitar and chiming vibes. Mandell has hit the mark with this one. Comparisons can be made, but Mandell stands alone with this piece of artistry.
