Emm Gryner's Girl Versions, the 2001 album on which she recast a collection of hard-rocking testosterone anthems, was a career highlight, so it’s no surprise to find her back in covers territory with Songs Of Love And Death. The record is an ode to contemporary Irish pop and features meditative readings of tunes by The Corrs, Ash, Thin Lizzy and a slew of others. Its downbeat tone is a bit uniform considering the diversity of the bands represented, but Gryner’s soft-sell vocals and unmistakable devotion to the material shine through. A capable songwriter in her own right, Gryner again demonstrates her gift for interpretation.
