Yeah, it’s only the start of 2005, but the best song you’re likely to hear this year is Trail Of Dead’s "Will You Smile Again For Me." The song opens with a spiraling burst of guitars and a percussive assault before magically dissipating. Then stretched horns pulse in the distance and there’s some forlorn warbling before a primitive, thunderous pounding re-emerges from the underground, all but swallowing cracked, pained words in its seething rumble of noise. It’s an epic orch-rock rollercoaster that leaves you pliable and impressionable for the rest of the wildly varied adventures contained on Worlds Apart. Not that you’ll care much though. You’ll have already been to the top of the mountain.
