I Am Committing A Sin — Grow Past Their Promises

Music Review
I Am Committing A Sin's Grow Past Their Promises

I Am Committing A Sin share a practice space with Silverstein, so it's no surprise their debut EP Grow Past Their Promises packs equal doses of aggression and melody though they sound little like their co-inhabitants.

There's an uneasy sense of anger here, possibly towards society's tendency to brainwash people into fearing a life without religion or individuality. Lyrics like "Once a pacifist's maxim — he who dared not fight, became a Coulter-crusade and marched with his head on a pike" showcase a great deal of education and creativity that suggests IACAS are smarter than your average post-punk band.

This album is very much about fighting for freedom of expression and draws off a great knowledge of politics, media and history in order to enhance this traditional punk rock ethic. It questions things like hegemony and world empire, inevitably prompting dialogue without being overtly abrasive.

Standouts include "Apostasy Now" and "Maxims," both of which show a great maturity for a debut.

Grow Past Their Promises was engineered and mastered by Justin Koop (Grade, Billy Talent, Finger Eleven), this is an undeniably solid EP that shows IACAS are a step above in both content and construction.
