Kevin Spacey is known for playing diminutive, wooden characters in now-classic films like The Usual Suspects and American Beauty. So it’s surprising that he would tackle the role of crooner Bobby Darin in the biopic Beyond The Sea. The actor fares well though, showcasing a solid set of pipes on the movie’s soundtrack. Spacey lacks the personality that Darin brought to classics like "Mack The Knife" and "Splish Splash," but he manages to tackle some of the singer’s later folk/country material well, notably "If I Were A Carpenter."
Make no mistake, Spacey is a competent singer and his backing band is stellar. Darin fans old and new will likely appreciate Spacey's detailed and highly respectful tribute to a great singer. That said, it's hard to match an icon like Darin on his best material.
