Explosions In The Sky — The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place

Music Review
Explosions In The Sky's The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place

The second disc from Explosions In The Sky pulls you all over the place.

At very best, it’s a startling example of guitar driven instrumental music that is majestic and compelling without being a wankfest. EITS use '90s indie guitar rock sound for their expansive creations. Once these guys really hone their sense of dynamics (the transitions are a little tense in spots) they'll be really impressive.

At very worst (and it’s really not that bad), certain long passages, because of their structure and melody, scream out for some lyrics. You almost expect Mark Kozelek, the former Red House Painters singer, to start up at any time since his sense of melancholy would be a perfect fit with many parts of this record.

Regardless of all that fancy shit, this is a great 3 a.m., lying on the couch, slumber land soundtrack for your dreams. Just tilt your head back.
