Unless your Grandma has a particular fondness for those zany Barenaked Ladies or, worse yet, the Dave Matthews Band, this originals-heavy holiday comp isn’t likely going to get much play on Christmas Day, but it might serve to get you in the mood while you’re doing your gift wrapping. Worth it just for the original songs by Rufus Wainwright and Badly Drawn Boy (which are actually clever) and The Flaming Lips’ "White Christmas," most of the tracks are decent, but not always particularly festive. Special mention does, however, go out to Avril Lavigne and Chantal Kreviazuk’s duet on "O Holy Night," where Avril’s hollow, child-like vocal makes her sound like she’s auditioning for a role on the Charlie Brown Christmas special. It’s oddly endearing, exactly as a contemporary Christmas carol should be.
